Amphetamine Resource

Today we launch our new amphetamine resource! This in-depth booklet covers information on amphetamine-type stimulants, mental health, routes of administration, the risks of mixing and much more.

Amphetamine (speed) is a stimulant drug that was discovered more than 100 years ago. Since then, the drug has been used in many different ways, from keeping soldiers awake during World War II to being marketed to housewives to help them manage the housework and lose weight. In more recent years, amphetamine-type drugs have been used in the treatment of conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Throughout its history, amphetamine has shifted from being widely available and socially acceptable, to being strictly controlled by international drugs legislation.

There were 60 amphetamine-related deaths in Scotland in 2020. This is a 15% increase on 2019 and a 140% increase in the five years since 2016. There were 7 deaths where amphetamine was the only drug implicated (12% of 60 amphetamine-related deaths). For more information on drug-related deaths in Scotland read our Drugs at Crew, Interim Report on DRDs.

The booklet is available for free download. For a small cost you can order print copies for your service – please email admin@crew2000.org.uk or order directly though our ‘Get our Stuff‘ page.
